When I was growing up, my mother made sure that Thanksgiving was a special occasion for our family. She always wanted us to be together for at least one big Thanksgiving meal during this holiday, complete with turkey and all the trimmings. We were all very lucky to be able to spend many Thanksgivings together, with my siblings and their families traveling from afar to be part of the celebrations.
I’m very thankful for all the wonderful Thanksgiving family memories that I have. Living a short driving distance from many of my family members has allowed me the chance to share most holiday celebrations with family.
Unfortunately, for so many people these days, creating special Thanksgiving traditions with family, and spending time with those they love, is something that is impossible, due to financial limitations. For those that live a great distance from their cherished loved ones, rising travel costs have become a huge barrier to those wishing to spend the holidays with their family.
According to a recent consumer survey conducted by SC Johnson, nearly half (46 percent) of Americans who have spent a major fall or winter holiday away from their family do so due to financial limitations. Two in five Americans report they will not be home with their loved ones this Thanksgiving. The survey also shows that the average cost of holiday travel between November and January is approximately $560.
Just ask my friend, Shannon about the cost of traveling home for the holidays. Shannon, who is hoping to fly her family of 6 across the country to be with her parents and siblings this Christmas, did a quick check on the cost of flying all 6 of them home on a domestic airline for the holidays. Traveling home with her husband and kids could set Shannon back as much as 11K.
ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS! That’s absurd!
The average traveler simply cannot afford those prices, no matter how much they wish to fly home to be with their family for the holidays. Unless Shannon can find a better deal, she and her family will not be making it home for the holidays.
For my American family and friends, there is hope that they can make it home to celebrate Thanksgiving with loved ones.
