Hell Freezes Over - Top 30 List Of Funny Town Names

Did you know that Hell finally froze over? Well, it did! Hell, Michigan, that is. This week, during what has been dubbed the Polar Vortex (the frigid arctic temperatures that encapsulated parts of North America), the town of Hell, Michigan, finally froze over.

Watching a news story about Hell, Michigan, on tv the other night made me think about something that frequently makes me chuckle – funny town names.

We have our share of funny town names here in Canada. For example, I think every Canadian has heard of Dildo, Newfoundland. One of my personal all-time favourite town names comes from Quebec, not far from the New Brunswick border – Saint-Louis-du-Ha-Ha! You are chuckling now, aren’t you? Not only is the name good for a belly laugh, but I love the fact that the name actually ends with an exclamation point! I’ve driven through Saint-Louis-du-Ha-Ha! numerous times on my way to the Maritimes, and seeing the town sign at the side of the highway still makes me laugh every time.

What must it be like for residents from Saint-Louis-du-Ha-Ha! to have to tell people where they are from? I’m certain they have to spell it out in full every…single…time. Imagine the kinds of problems the name must present to those who have to fill it out on an online form. Not only is the name St-Louis-du-Ha-Ha! long, you’re likely to get an error message trying to include the hyphens and exclamation point. I bet residents see a message like this come up —> “I’m sorry, the name must contain only alphabetical characters. Please try again.”
