With much anticipation, Tomorrowland opens in theatres across Canada today. We were lucky to be able to attend a screening of this Disney mystery adventure the other night, and we went filled with hope for great things. We were looking forward to a movie filled with action and adventure, and maybe a glimpse into the future of what tomorrow holds for human beings.
One of the lessons learned from the new movie, Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, is that we humans are always being told about our footprint on earth, how we contribute to global warming, and how we are destroying the world around us – yet we never really put solutions to action.
We definitely experienced some of everything we expected out of Tomorrowland, but we came away from this movie feeling like our jet pack hadn’t quite taken us for the ride we had hoped for (you’ll understand my reference if you go see the movie).
We had no preconceived ideas about this film, as really, this movie has been marketed without releasing much information about the movie itself. The marketing has probably been done this way on purpose to make sure viewers come to see this movie with a sense of wonder and an open mind. A smart move on Disney’s behalf perhaps, or maybe this is part of what contributed to leaving us feeling like there was something missing from Tomorrowland. Personally, I was a little disappointed in George Clooney’s “boy genius” character in terms of the adult version of Frank that he plays on-screen. I guess maybe because I was expecting more from the actor, and less from the main character that the movie is actually based around, Casey, played by Britt Robertson.
Tomorrowland is a visually beautiful film, with some great action scenes, and it is a movie that definitely makes you stop and think about the future of our beloved earth. Clocking in at over 2 hours, we both felt this movie ran too long, and the ending left us feeling a bit unsatisfied. While there were young children under 10 at the pre-screening, we both felt that this is a movie better suited for tweens and teens, who we are certain would quite enjoy this type of film. True to Disney’s reputation, this film is definitely one you can send your kids to and not have to worry about the content they are watching. That’s rare in this day and age!
