Those were the famous words spoken by Astronaut Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969 when Armstrong became the first man to place his foot on the surface of the moon.

I wasn’t yet two years old when my family, and the majority of people in the world who had access to a television at that time, sat and watched with great pride and fascination, Neil Armstrong’s famous lunar landing and moon walk.

Ryan Gosling’s intense portrayal of Armstrong, and what it was like for he and his family during Armstrong’s riveting journey to the moon, made me realize how little I actually knew about this mission and the events surrounding the successful moon landing.

The tremendous toll this mission took on he and his family, the loss of his friends in the tragic events leading up to the historic mission, and the sheer strength, guts, focus and determination it took to become the first man on the moon, left me with a whole new appreciation for Neil Armstrong.

For me, someone who thought she knew a lot about this lunar landing and the space missions leading up to this historic event, I certainly learned a great deal about Neil and his riveting journey to become the first man to step foot on the moon.

While this movie was great to watch in the comfort of my own home, I can’t help but wish I had seen it in theatres. Some scenes in First Man – think spaceships blasting off, fires, emergency situations – were simply made for the theatre experience.

This is a great movie for those with an interest in space travel, history, or those looking for a little nostalgia. While the ending came as a surprise us, and left us with several unanswered questions, we still very much enjoyed First Man, and Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of one of the world’s great space heroes.
