My healthy oral care routine started early in life for me. Thanks to my parents, brushing my teeth was a regular part of my daily routine as a child. Pushing cavity prevention one step further, my parents made me a part of the 1970’s generation of kids that were given little green fluoride pills, to be chewed up and swallowed daily. Anyone remember those? I don’t think anyone could ever forget being subjected to those horrible tasting pills. As horrid as they were, it appears that they had a long-lasting effect on cavity prevention for me. I’ve only ever had one cavity my whole life (and this is coming from someone who likes their sweets and candy!).
My public school also played a part in starting me off on the road to a healthy oral care routine. I can still remember regular dental hygiene sessions in the school gymnasium where students were given a small amount of liquid fluoride which we were required to swish around in our mouth for the amount of time it took us to walk the circumference of the gymnasium. Then there were those red “disclosing tablets”. The tables containing red food dye that, when chewed after brushing your teeth, would highlight the spots on your teeth where you did not brush properly. Remember those?
