Just like their human companions, pets need to stay hydrated. When our beloved dogs and cats become dehydrated, this lack of fluid in their system can lead to significant health problems – and even death!

In a recent study conducted by PetSafe® Brand, it was revealed that 66 percent of Canadians were unaware that lethargy or unusual lack of energy indicates dehydration in their pets.

The following percentages of respondents were aware of these common signs of pet dehydration:

Sunken eyes – 32 percent
Decreased skin elasticity – 29 percent
Loss of appetite – 27 percent
Depression – 17 percent

Alarmingly, eight percent of those polled did not recognize any of the signs of dehydration in pets.

Whether active or calm, pets need plenty of water to stay hydrated. Cats require 300ml daily and dogs between 600ml and 2,500ml depending on their size, as pet water requirements are approximately 70ml per kilogram.

exercise your pet during the coolest parts of the day (early morning and evening)
always maintain a fresh, clean water supply for your pet
clean water bowls daily to prevent bacteria from growing in the bowl
know your pet’s safety limits and the signs of dehydration (see above)
add a little wet dog or cat food in with your pet’s kibble
