Canadian Blog House was provided with samples of Yellofruit, as a suggestion for our Canadian dessert list. All opinions are our own.
Here at Canadian Blog House, we are always happy to celebrate anything and everything “Canadian”.
A recent delivery of Canada’s newest frozen dessert, Yellofruit, got me thinking about the many delicious treats we have in this great country that are uniquely “ours”.
So we put together a list of Canadian treats that we thought would make a great addition to any Canadian dessert list!
10 Canadian Treats That Should Be On Your Canadian Dessert List
Yellofruit
This brand new Canadian-made frozen dessert deserves a spot on this list for many reasons! Check them out:
- non-dairy
- clean label
- organic
- plant-based (banana)
- peanut-free
- 3 delicious flavours
- certified vegan
- Canadian family-owned business
- creamy and unique taste
- not chalky, dry, or icy
- tasty alternative to nut, soy, and coconut based products
- not icy like the ‘all fruit’ or ‘sorbet’ desserts
Yellofruit was “built on the premise of feeding delicious food to our kids that is a little bit better for them and the planet.”
Yellofruit comes in 3 delicious flavours including Holly’s Favourite Mango, Monty’s Favourite Strawberry, and Eddy’s Favourite Chocolate.
You can find Yellofruit at a number of Canadian stores. Check back frequently as they are always adding more!
Keep in mind that this dessert is banana-based, so a taste of banana is evident in each flavour.
Our favourite? Although we enjoyed them all, we would have to choose the strawberry if we had to pick just one. So refreshing!
Yellofruit is a Canadian dessert you can feel good about eating!
Nanaimo Bars
I love British Columbia for a number of reasons, the least of which is their magnificent Nanaimo Bars.
These rich Canadian treats are made with a layer of yellow custard nestled between a layer of delicious chocolate ganache over a coconut-graham crust.
Nanaimo Bars are a sinful Canadian dessert bar that very few people can resist!
Saskatoon Berry Pie
It was only a few years ago that I first heard of the Saskatoon Berry!
Also known as the prairie berry, juneberry, or the serviceberry, the Saskatoon Berry is the beloved berry of Canada’s prairie provinces.
You can find the Saskatoon Berry in all kinds of Canadian treats, however, these delicious berries are commonly found in pies, tarts, jams, sauces, and even alcoholic beverages.
Purdy’s Chocolates
I grew up hearing stories about how my father and his siblings used to enjoy their favourite chocolates from a chocolate store in Vancouver, British Columbia – Purdy’s Chocolates.
It wasn’t until many decades later that I got to try these special chocolates for myself for the very first time, during a trip to Vancouver.
Thankfully, Purdy’s Chocolates made their way east and now I can indulge in a little Purdy’s chocolate whenever I am at select malls here in Ottawa.
Don’t miss your chance to try out some of Purdy’s specialty chocolates. Depending upon the time of year, you may find unique Canadian flavoured chocolates like Purdy’s Saskatoon Berry Ganache made with “creamy white chocolate ganache with Saskatoon berry juice (which has an unforgettable nutty and tart flavour), in a dark chocolate shell speckled with naturally coloured cocoa butter. “
Butter Tarts
This quintessential Canadian dessert is beloved by most Canadians from coast-to-coast, and is one of the few authentic Canadian recipes that was originally documented on paper.
You’ll find countless variations of butter tart recipes online, however, in order to be considered a true butter tart by Canadians, this Canadian treat should contain a semi-solid, ooey-gooey buttery filling, with a little crunch on top, and held inside a round, flaky pastry shell.
Canada’s love of the butter tart has spawned the “Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Tour” where you can explore 50 unique stops along the tour to taste-test some of the best-of-the-best butter tarts Ontario has to offer.
Beavertails
You really shouldn’t visit Ottawa without trying one of our famous Beavertails.
Both crispy and chewy all at once, this tasty one-of-a-kind Canadian pastry is available in 120 topping combinations. Often imitated, never duplicated, Beavertails are the perfect Canadian snack for the whole family.
Look for Beavertails in downtown Ottawa at the Byward Market. Heading to one of our local festivals? You’ll find Beavertails at Winterlude/Bal-de-Neige, RBC Bluesfest, and more!
Timbits
Perfect for road trips, a box of Tim Horton’s Timbits has likely made its way into every Canadian car at one time or another.
If you’ve never tried a Timbit, what are you waiting for?
Everyone has their favourites but, if you are planning to share your Timbits, it’s best to ask for a selection of these yummy donut holes.
I bet you can’t just eat one!
Persian Rolls
My one regret after we visited Thunder Bay for a very short stay last summer was not seeking out and tasting one of this city’s famous prized pastries – Persian Rolls.
Originally made at Bennett’s Bakery in Thunder Bay, Persian Rolls are essentially sweet, fried cinnamon rolls with a fruity pink icing on top.
Apparently, Persian Rolls are so sacred to Thunder Bay residents that many have a hard time giving them up when they move away, and will pay a small fortune to have them shipped to their new home.
Tarte au Sucre
With its origins rooted in France, Quebec’s beloved Tarte au Sucre (Sugar Pie) is a sweet lover’s dream dessert.
Similar in taste to a butter tart, Tarte au Sucre’s signature ingredient is maple syrup or maple sugar.
You’ll find a wide variety of Tarte au Sucre recipes online, however, the best Tarte au Sucre recipes are simple and use few ingredients.
Jos Louis
Canada’s love affair with the Jos Louis began in 1932 when this sponge cake with vanilla-flavoured creme filling coated in a chocolatey layer, was created by Vachon in honour of the two Vachon brothers, Joseph and Louis.
