Thinking of taking a vacation in your own backyard this summer?
A visit the other day from my friend Linda from A Labour of Life, got me thinking about ways those of us who do not have access to a great Canadian cottage, can still enjoy a relaxing summer vacation in our own backyards.
You see, Linda and her husband have created a beautiful oasis in their backyard. In fact, it is so lovely, I may have to go and vacation at Linda’s house this summer! (but, shhh…don’t tell her I’m coming over!)
Although the focal point of Linda’s backyard is their pool, she and her husband have spent time creating a very inviting backyard setting that anyone can recreate, with or without a pool.
After seeing Linda’s backyard, I’ve come up with five reasons to help you see why creating your own backyard oasis and spending your vacation time at home this summer can be very enjoyable!

Bringing The Inside Out
You’ve got all the comforts of home inside, so why not bring those comforts outside?
Outdoor furnishings have changed drastically since I was a kid. Gone are the days of aluminum-framed lawn chairs with nylon strapping. Today, there are so many great patio furniture options to help you create the perfect vacation space right in your own backyard.
Linda and her husband have furnished several areas of their backyard oasis with various styles of outdoor furniture. Furnishings so comfortable, I felt like I could have been sitting inside her living room.
Of course, you’ll want all the comforts of home outside, right? Linda and her husband have put up outdoor shelving to hold such things as plastic plates, cups, goblets, and more – giving them easy access to everything they need to entertain friends and family in their backyard!
If you are lucky enough to have access to a garage from your backyard, you can even place a refrigerator in the garage for easy access to food and drinks!
Add plants, pretty flowers, and decorative pillows to provide a nice finish to your beautiful backyard. You won’t want to go back into the house!
Save Money For That Winter Vacation
There’s no doubt about it, it’s pretty fabulous to own a cottage, or have a pool in your backyard during hot summer days.
If the purchase of a cottage property is beyond your budget, consider the alternative. You can enjoy several winter vacations in the warm sunny south for a fraction of the cost of owning a second property.
A backyard vacation can be relaxing and allow you to look forward to that winter vacation!
Time To Check Off That Summer To-Do List
A vacation in your own backyard means less time away from home – and more time to work on things that need to get done around the house.
You can spend most of your time relaxing in your backyard oasis during your vacation, while still devoting a little time to checking off items on your summer to-do list. It’s a win-win situation!

This reason pretty much speaks for itself. Once you have your backyard oasis set up, aside from some regular maintenance and cleaning, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your vacation time in your backyard.
Just think…
- no fighting traffic trying to escape the city for cottage country.
- no marathon shopping excursions to ensure you’ve got all the food, drinks, and other necessities needed for a week or two at the cottage.
- no vacation or weekend frustration of having to get ready to head off for the cottage. Your backyard vacation starts the minute you arrive home.
Family, Friends, and Neighbours
If you love to have family, friends, and neighbours over, enjoy your backyard vacation by inviting them over for Happy Hour, a backyard BBQ, or a swim in the pool. Everyone will enjoy your beautiful backyard!
